Imagine a tireless warrior, a defender of nature who has dedicated his life to protecting the Maule and Itata rivers in the Maule Region, Chile. That's Rodrigo De La O Guerrero, honored by Waterkeeper Alliance with the Terry Backer Award in 2022.

For 16 years, Rodrigo has been the voice of the voiceless, confronting corporate giants and winning battles that seemed impossible. His bravery stopped a thermoelectric project that threatened his beloved land. Today, he stands strong against a real estate company that seeks to destroy the coast he loves so much.

But as he continues to fight for his waterways, he’s also fighting for his health, Rodrigo is battling a serious illness that diminishes his strength, but at the same time makes him braver. Our warrior doesn't give up!

Imagina un guerrero incansable, defensor de la naturaleza que ha dedicado su vida a proteger los ríos Maule e Itata en la Región del Maule, Chile. Ese es Rodrigo de La O Guerrero, el galardonado por la Alianza Waterkeeper con el premio Terry Backer en 2022.

Durante 16 años, Rodrigo ha sido la voz de los que no tienen voz, enfrentándose a gigantes corporativos y ganando batallas que parecían imposibles. Su valentía detuvo un proyecto termoeléctrico que amenazaba su amada tierra. Hoy, sigue en pie contra una inmobiliaria que pretende destruir la costa que tanto ama.

Pero mientras continúa luchando por sus ríos, también está luchando por su salud. Rodrigo está enfrentando una enfermedad grave que disminuye sus fuerzas, pero al mismo tiempo lo hace más valiente. ¡Un guerrero no se rinde!

[CAMPAÑA INICIADA POR LA INTERNACIONAL ALIANZA WATERKEEPER]

Bobby Kennedy Jr.: A Defender of Nature and Humanity

In 2010, I was in La Paz, Baja California Mexico, attending the Waterkeeper Alliance Global Conference as a member and Chilean representative. At that time, Robert Francis Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.), was our president (and one of its founders) and he was for several years with practically unanimous votes. His presence was inspiring, he was a great speaker, and he motivated us all to project new ideas.

RFK Jr. is truly a noble man who has acknowledged his mistakes, learned from them, and made a life dedicated to defending those who are most vulnerable to corporate pressure and the impact of massive private investments in pristine lands affecting local communities by confronting them, and in many cases beating them, in court.

Today he is an independent candidate for president and it fills me with pride to see that same passion for wanting a better country, and he has thrown himself into it, with all his courage and determination. That is valued and respected, no matter who it is. He has played fair.

Because I know him, it is very disappointing the Democratic Party of the United States has dedicated all the attack work, strategically well financed, to stop, through ridiculous legal loopholes, a person who has risked his entire life to defend justice and stop large corporations that pollute our waters, rivers, our soils, our air and take the profits home from entering the runoff.

RFK Jr. has collected more signatures than any independent candidate in history, allowing him to be in the runoff election directly (1M+). However, the so-called Democratic Party will not allow this, spending millions of dollars through a dirty legal war that has only managed to tarnish the name of its own party, without thinking or risking everything, that leaving RFK Jr. out of the race in this way would be its end, since it would end up becoming an anti-democratic corporate party.

Bobby is a fighter, he does not resort to crude personal attacks, his story is an example; he speaks and attacks, with the frankness that irritates many, simply with the truth and calls for the unity of a disunited country in a political sphere that urgently needs to be applied.

I wish the United States a better future and I believe that Bobby Kennedy is the best chance. I hope that everyone who can defend this option will recognize and make known all the work that Bobby has done throughout his life, as well as the incredible work and passion of the more than 100 thousand volunteers who have made an intelligent and unique campaign, offering a candidate of hope and much reflection. We will defend democracy by defending him until the end.

Bobby Kennedy Jr.: un defensor de naturaleza y humanidad

En 2010, estuve en La Paz, Baja California México, asistiendo a Conferencia Global de la Alianza Waterkeeper como miembro y representante chileno. Por ese entonces, Robert Francis Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.), era nuestro presidente (y uno de sus fundadores) y lo fue por varios años con votaciones prácticamente unánimes. Su presencia inspiraba, gran orador, y nos motivaba a todos a proyectar nuestro trabajo enfocado en la integración social y defensa socioambiental desde lo local; desde la perspectiva territorial.

RFK Jr, es de verdad, es un hombre noble, que ha reconocido errores, aprendido de ellos y hecho una vida dedicada a la defensa de quienes resultan ser los más vulnerables entre la presión corporativa y el impacto de siderales inversiones privadas en tierras prístinas afectando a comunidades locales, confrontándoles, y ganándoles en muchos casos, en la corte.

Hoy es candidato independiente a la presidencia y llena de orgullo ver esa misma pasión por querer un mejor país, y se ha volcado a ello, con todo su coraje y decisión. Eso se valora y respeta, no importa quien sea. Ha jugado limpio. 

Por eso muy desilusionante, porque le conozco, todo el trabajo de ataque del partido Demócrata de los Estados Unidos le ha dedicado, estratégicamente bien financiado, para detener vía resquicios legales ridículos, entrar al balotaje a una persona que se la ha jugado toda su vida por defender la justicia y detener a grandes corporaciones que contaminan nuestras aguas, ríos, nuestros suelos, nuestro aire y se llevan las utilidades para sus casas.

RFK Jr., ha reunido más firmas que cualquier candidato independiente en la historia lo que le permite estar en el balotaje directamente (1M+). Sin embargo, el supuesto partido demócrata no lo quiere permitir, gastando millones de dólares a través de una guerra legal sucia que lo único que ha logrado es mancillar el nombre de su propio partido, sin pensar o arriesgándolo todo, que dejando a RFK Jr. fuera de carrera de esta forma, sería su fin, ya que terminaría convertido en un partido corporativo antidemocrático.

Bobby, es un luchador, él no recurre a ataques personales burdos, su historia es un ejemplo; habla y ataca, con la franqueza que a muchos irrita, simplemente con la verdad y convoca a la unión de un país dividido en una esfera política urgente de aplicar.

Le deseo a Estados Unidos un mejor futuro y creo que Bobby Kennedy es la mejor chance. Ojala todos los que puedan defender esta opción, reconociendo y dando a conocer todo el trabajo de Bobby a lo largo de su vida ha realizado, como así tambien, el increíble trabajo y pasión de los más de 100 mil voluntarios que han hecho una campaña inteligente, única, y ofreciendo un candidato de esperanza y mucha reflexión. Al defenderlo hasta el final defendemos la democracia.
